Evening Examen: Reviewing Your Day with God

The evening examen is a brief prayer of reflection at the end of the day. It helps you see where God was present and where growth is needed.

This practice is often linked to Saint Ignatius of Loyola, who taught believers to examine their day with honesty and gratitude.

In Psalm 4:4, we are told to reflect in silence before rest. The examen brings order to the heart before sleep.

The steps are simple:

1. Gratitude
Thank God for specific moments from the day.

2. Review
Walk through the day from morning to evening. Notice your thoughts, words, and actions.

3. Contrition
Acknowledge failures and ask for mercy.

4. Resolution
Choose one clear improvement for tomorrow.

5. Closing Prayer
Entrust the night to Godโ€™s care.

The examen does not require long time. Five to ten minutes is enough. Regular review sharpens awareness and strengthens discipline.

Reflection builds accountability. Accountability supports growth.

Short daily reflection prevents repeated mistakes.

Consistency matters more than length.

  • Set a fixed time before bed for reflection.
  • Keep a small notebook for brief notes.
  • End the day with a short prayer of trust.
Tomorrow, we will focus on forming the habit of daily gratitude.
